But if a mother is not on ARV treatment, the old problem arises of the risk of the baby being infected during the mixing of baby and mother's blood at birth. There used to be the ARV drug Nevirapine given at the hospital during birth.
The virus circulates in the baby's blood for a short time before some move to the hiding places to remain to the death of the sufferer.
The virus in the blood will be killed by the ARV. If ARV stops, the HIV bursts out of the hiding places to start fatal re-infection of blood and renewed destruction of the gut.
