We read in the media that 11000 people have died of AIDS in PNG. Most of them would have died with no anti-retroviral drugs. Had they been on the drugs, many would still be alive.
If that many people have died of AIDS, it means that 11000 families have suffered trauma. Most of those people would have experienced dementia which is too horrible to think about.
They would have suffered depression, paranoia, delirium, dementia, hallucinations, delusions, memory loss, hatred and violence.
They would have terrified their families with evil dreams and fantasies of people and spirits wanting to kill them. Many would have woken their families with screaming in the night and hallucinations and delusions.
A common theme among demented people is that they are being pursued by people wanting to kill them.
As they proceeded through to final AIDS, many would not have recognized family members. They would have wandered far from home and forgotten how to come back. Some would have been violent to family members.
We read of people living with HIV/AIDS who say they were rejected by family. This can be the result of dementia. It may be that they wander the streets like lost sheep. Then they blame their family.
Some families may not understand. Their daughter has started going out and not coming back. She is obviously selling her body. It can be more that she has gone out and can not remember how to come back. Men have taken advantage of her, ignoring the fact that she looks like a skeleton.
This can happen to HIV-infected men and women. There was a gay boy at 3 Angels Care who would never stay at the centre. He gave a false name and false family address and would be always out of the centre. He would come back with a bleeding anus. He died after several weeks.
Others in earlier stages of AIDS will do what they have always done. They are never home and spending their time boozing on homebrew and alcohol, smoking tobacco and marijuana and living a promiscuous lifestyle.
AIDS Holistics supported a number of people in final AIDS and they had delusions about being starved by their family. This was not true. They refused to eat.
It is all the result of the final destruction of the small intestine, the blockage in absorption of nutrients, salts and water and the break-down of the water-salt balance.
In final AIDS, it is common for these people to go into denial. They believe they are cured. This can be the beginning of the end if they refuse to take their ARV drugs and cause the virus to be immune. The second line of drugs is not free.
If not on ARV, they will suffer protein-depletion which means that their muscles will waste away. So too their hair will fall out and finger and toe nails will break.
If ARV is not generally available or if HIV infected people do not ever go for testing, there will still be thousands moving into dementia and horrifying their families.
With ARV properly used, sufferers may last 20 years. The world does really not know yet. Sufferers have to follow Positive Living particularly with water and nutrition. Without ARV, the sufferer can last 10-12 years but is slowly dropping to death.
