LEARNING BY PICTURE BOOKS

How, when, where, why, who and what?

Parents and teachers need to know the power they hold in teaching language, reading, writing and general knowledge to their children. Learning can take place by working with the children through picture books.

A key approach to teaching spoken and written language is by the Question and Answer method. Children at early age love to be read story books. Their desire drops as they become teenagers and they come to think that they are too old.

Years ago, I bought several children's encyclopaedia for my children in Papua New Guinea. These had coloured pictures of all living creatures. These were perfect to teach the children about the world and teach them how to speak English.

I have a 6 year old girl in my house. The children's encyclopaedia have been dragged out yet again. The plan is to teach her English by systematic Mastery Learning. She looks at the pictures one at a time.

She is required to answer in a sentence which is always based on the question form. We will go through each book a dozen times over a year or two. Each time, the questions will be asked again but a little more specific.

A dozen books read through a dozen times is 144 lessons. Other books will be used too. No wonder my second daughter thinks school is boring. The same knowledge and vocabulary will be used over and over.
