Some years ago, I worked in a business college in Port Moresby teaching Business Communication. Among many other skills, I taught the skill of combining sentences into Sweet English by Mastery Learning. I would help the students along exercise by exercise.

I would demonstrate some. They would practise some. They completed about 300 patterns over 14 weeks. Then I was to leave and a PNG teacher took over. He just set the work and sat back.

Students did not master the skills. They mainly got the patterns wrong. Some PNG teachers would have a bad attitude when it comes to Mastery Learning. They do not demonstrate and help students. They just like to see students get the work wrong.

Mastery Learning is designed for the students to be helped by demonstration by the teacher until they are able to complete the exercises successfully.

The teacher demonstrates and explains one or two exercises with the help of students. Then students try one. If they get it wrong, teacher demonstrates again. Try the next one. Got it right? Try one more. Got it right? Try another one.

New variable in the next exercise. Teacher demonstrates and explains. Try the next one? Got it right? Try the next one. Until the end. The students succeed by succeeding. In Mastery Learning of Combining Sentences above, the students ended the completion of 300 exercises quite changed in their writing skill.
