STUDENTS STRIKE ON CLIMATE CHANGE

Professional teachers give all sides to any issue. Politicians just give one side and tell the community that the opposition member is talking rubbish.

On Australian TV news we hear of students striking on the inactivity of Government on climate change, We are told by the Government that more than enough is being done.

Half smart commentators declare that students are wasting a day of study in shouting empty slogans. Teachers are stupid left wing propagandists telling false stories to students who are immature with simplistic understanding of the issue.

That may be partly true but marks the beginning of the journey of the next generation of voters in saving the planet from over-exploitation. Students want all coal mining and coal burning banned and the nation moved to 100% renewable energy.

That could take many years and reduce the nation to industrial chaos. There will be massive power shortages, rising costs with loss of business and jobs.

We are told that Australia contributes a negligible input to global warming. But then Australia sells massive coal supplies to the major polluters. That removes our guilt. Haha.

It is expedient to keep selling and burning coal. There is no right or wrong. We are told that our coal burns clean.

The nation will suffer as coal fired power is closed and renewable energy can not close the gap. Surely the students will not blame the Government. That is what students wanted to happen. That is a LOSE-LOSE situation.

Global warming and conservation should be key studies in schools. The only danger is that students may fall prey to extremist left wing activists who sabotage education and then move on to gay and lesbian rights.

As a Biology teacher, I take a long term view on climate over 1000 years. There was a little ice age from the 1200s to the 1800s that engulfed the world the result of volcanic activity and ash that blocked the sun and froze the planet.

Students could make climate change and conservation the major areas of study from grade to grade with focus on overpopulation, deforestation, destruction of habitat, preservation of species, management of water, reforestation, warming of seas, droughts, snow falls, bush fires, cyclones, tsunamis and tornadoes.

We are being told that the snow falls make global warming a fake message. I would trace the Australian "droughts and flooding rains" back to first recorded data. There have been massive bush fires in Australia in the last century. 

But there is a definite problem with warming and acidification of seas. We come to expect the droughts that come with El Nino. Fish are dropping in quantity as over-fishing depletes stock.

We are told of the melting of glaciers and the icecaps of the Arctic and Antarctic. Polar bears are moving into eskimo villages scavenging for food.

Let students research and record the studies into climatic and conservation problems. Let them identify possible fake news. Let them study the many aspects of planetary health.

Let students acknowledge the stress of farmers growing produce to sell during an ongoing drought with no water in the rivers. Aboriginal tribes suffer from dry rivers. 

Let students recognize the shortage of goods in supermarkets and the high costs. Let them understand the morality of vegan farm terrorists.

Let students come up with plans to conserve water to be channelled from the northern catchment areas of Australia into the Murray-Darling basin. 

The massive floods in Townsville could have been channelled into the inland not wasted into the sea. What about water piped from the Ord River dam? Is the artesian system depleted?

Papua New Guinea has massive rivers flowing into the Gulf of Carpentaria. In Lae, there is rain every night.

Give teachers, students and the community the chance to know all the facts and put the big picture together. Let the kids have a day off to strike. 

So what if many are shouting mindless slogans? It is the start for those who will make a difference in years to come.
