ABOUT VENTILATORS

Post Courier 22 September 2020 Grace Auka Salmang

According to Dr Daoni Eserom, a ventilator helps pump oxygen into a potential CoVID 19 patient's body. Air flows through the tube and down the windpipe.

The ventilator breathes for you if you can not do it on your own. It can be set to take in a certain number of breaths per minute.

For patients with the worst effects of the infection, a ventilator can offer the best chance of survival.

A ventilator takes over the body's breathing when the virus causes the lungs to fail. This gives the patient time to fight of the infection an recover.

According to the World Health Authority some 80% of people infected ith CoVID 19 recover without needing hospital treatment but one in 6 becomes seriously ill.

In severe case, the virus causes damage to the lungs making the body's oxygen levels to drop and the patient finding it harder to breathe.

A ventilator is used to push air with increased levels of oxygen into the lungs. The ventilator has a humidifier that adds heat and moisture to the air supply that matches the patient's body temperature.

Patients are given medication to relax the respiratory muscles so that their breathing can be fully regulated by the machine.

People with milder symptoms may be given ventilation using face masks, nasal masks or mouth pieces  to allow air or oxygen to be pushed into the lungs.
