HIV INFECTED MAN WITH NO CONDOM

PEP is a treatment that can stop an HIV infection after the virus has entered a person's body. It must be taken within 72 hours of exposure.

There is unclear thinking on the matter of  safe sex for a man with HIV + infection. It is believed that the man can not pass infection if on antiretroviral (ART) medication.

This is only partly true. If the man takes ARV without default, there will most likely be no viral load in the blood. If he defaults, his sperm may have a viral load that will infect a woman.

If he takes no ARV, the woman is in danger of infection with HIV. If the woman is in doubt, she should go to the clinic within 72 hours for PEP medication.

The man should warn the woman if he is HIV positive with ART medication. Then she can make the choice.

If a man wants to make a woman pregnant, he should first go to the AIDS clinic for a viral load test just to make sure. That can take several weeks.

If there is no virus in his blood, it is safe not to use a condom - only this one time. If he has defaulted at any stage later, he should have a further test.
