In Australia, young underage girls are called "gaol bait".
In recent months there have been several men in Papua New Guinea sent to prison for underage sex with family girls or other girls.
Their defence was that the girl gave consent. In sentencing, the judge advised that an underage girl can not give consent. It is rape.
Sex with an underage girl is also called carnal knowledge. Sex with a family girl is called incest.
Why does Welfare or the Police not begin a media campaign to advise the facts of life to the community in general and men in particular?
Ignorance of the law is never a defence. But men who have underage sex with so-called consent can be making a serious mistake. Twenty years in prison is a harsh punishment.
These days, the average Papua New Guinea high school girl is over the age of 16 and over the age of consent. Most grade 9-10 girls are over the age of consent.
There is a photo in the media of a lovely young girl in the supermodel competition. She is beautiful, 16 years old and in grade 8. She looked 20 years old.
An underage girl at a nightclub can easily trick a man into believing that she is over the age of consent.
Sadly the onus is on the man who may end up in prison for believing a sweet smile and claim of age.
