I feel sad for Israel Folau with his well intentioned preaching that has given others the opportunity to damage him. He has caused upset in his team.
He belongs to the Truth of Jesus Christ church that is undoubtedly a Pacific church with a pure understanding of Scripture. His words have not been welcomed by the Rugby powers-that-be in Australia who may have hidden agenda.
He may be an inexperienced evangelist and needs to soften his approach. In my world there is a saying "Softly softly catchee monkey".
Rather than hit the media with a bombshell about going to hell, he could have talked about the love and forgiveness of God, the Grace that we can seek in God and the importance of our families and fellow human beings.
I hope he stays in Australia and returns to Rugby Union. Perhaps he could seek another way around preaching the love of God. Perhaps a focus on love of family will open the doors and make his team mates proud.
There are family men among players of all codes who bring their children on to the field.
