There have been reports in the Aboriginal community of Australia that old men watch young girls from the age of 5 years and pick those they want to marry.
They watch them as they grow up and then take them at an age that they consider the young girls are old enough for sex. The young boys watch helpless as they have no chance to have girl friends. Young girls have been taken by older men.
The same is happening in Papua New Guinea. With the LNG project, there are massive amounts of money in the community. Those who have large amounts of money are the older men.
They are starting to procure young girls at an early age and give them money. They also give money to her family which is really a down payment on bride price. The family comes depend on this source of money.
There is now an extra man in the family of this 12 year old girl and he has become her de facto husband. The family is financially trapped. Parents have to make the choice between welfare of the family and the future of their daughter.
The upshot of it all is that young girls are becoming used to having large amounts of money. They are not interested in any man who does not have money. This has a devastating effect on the young boys who have no money.
It is a fact of life that the young girls are becoming child brides of older men. Some men may pay her school fees and the fees of her brothers and sisters. This is not necessarily kindness but a slow process of locking the family down.
