TAKE ANTIRETROVIRALS ON TIME

When an HIV infected person starts on ART their CD4 cell count is dropping and falling below 500. They have to start the ARV medication. Please click:

Feb 24, 2016 - Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is the use of HIV medicines to treat HIV infection. ART is recommended for everyone infected with HIV. ART helps ...

It is important that they take their medication on time every day. A twelve hour tablet is to be taken at a time convenient to the individual. It may be 8am and 8 pm for the rest of their lives.

Some people may be alarmed that within a short time, diarrhoea returns. This may be a side effect of the ART.

It will be important that they take an antibiotic like Septrin daily as they are being affected by infection with bacteria in the gut.

This puzzles me as I have always been wary of taking antibiotics for the effect on either immunity or the massive colony of good and bad bacteria in the small intestine.

Ask your doctor. Should Septrin be taken daily and permanently? Surely it will destroy the vital role of good bacteria in the gut.

It is important that ARV drugs be taken regularly at the same time. There is danger in taking the drug at 8pm on day 1, 11pm on day 2, 4 am on day 3.

A newspaper report in the PNG media recently quoted a medical person as saying that some people risk death when their CD4 count drops to 100. But with regular ART, the count can rise to 1000.

A person with HIV will drop in weight. They will decline in both fats and protein. They feel their arms and legs to find that there is a drop in muscle tone.

They are starting to waste. It is time for ART and a diet rich in protein and a little fat. Perhaps they can afford a little fatty lamb meat each week. But plenty of fruit and vegetables.

That is a key to our Positive Living message.

Failure of the ARV treatment can be seen with the continued drop in the CD4 count and chronic diarrhoea. The person may need the second line of treatment.
