The National 8 December 2020 Letter to the editor Misack Ruri UPNG
Smoking can have many adverse effects. Some can lead to life threatening complications.
Smoking affects the respiratory system, circulatory system, skin and eyes and increases the risk of cancers.
It can damage the heart, blood vessels and blood cells. Many teens and adults in Papua New Guinea are seen smoking cigarettes and marijuana.
While quitting smoking can be challenging, the number of those who have quitted is higher than those still smoking.
Doctors and health care workers can help. This is a call to all Papua New Guineans to take heed of these warnings and quit before it is too late.
Comment: Smoking weakens the immune system and leaves the person vulnerable to infections that require a strong immune system. These include HIV/AIDS with ART and CoVID19.
An HIV infected person on ART who smokes and drinks alcohol will find that the ART medication does not work and the person will sink to AIDS and death.
