If woman is raped, she must be given ARV treatment in 12 hours. There is no requirement for HIV testing That will take 3 months. If the rapist is HIV positive, then she has been infected too.
The immediate ARV treatment is necessary to stop the virus in the blood or lymph before it hides in the deeper organs or hiding places. If the rapist is not HIV +. the woman is lucky. But the 28 days of ARV must go on.
A raped woman must not allow a silly health worker to deny the immediate treatment and tell her that she has to come back in three months for an HIV test. The woman needs a kill in the blood treatment not a full HIV test.
If the rapist is positive, then the woman is positive too. If the rapist is positive, the immediate treatment will remove the virus from the blood or lymph.
I tell my younger daughter that if she is ever raped, she must not be afraid to tell her dad immediately before the 12 hour limit has expired. I will not be angry. I will put her in the car and take her straight to the hospital for immediate ARV treatment. Yes daddy.
