BOUGAINVILLE GETS GENDER RIGHT

Post Courier 14 September 2016 P.18

The Bougainville Minister for Community Development Josephine Surei says that gender is about issues affecting men and women in the region and globally.

She said the people of Bougainville must understand that gender was not about boosting the morale of women and suppressing the men or vice versa. It was about men and women working as equals, supporting each other and creating a peaceful society.

Gender equality is all about being equal in all areas particularly in employment and distribution of all forms of services.

She said the issue about gender has been misunderstood in past years resulting in a lot of men being abused by very disobedient and abusive women of Bougainville.

Mrs Surei said that men and women must work together for the betterment of family, improve living standards and boost the local economy.

In the homes we have to teach our children how to appreciate one another as brothers and sisters and start to establish respect for the opposite sex at an early stage so that they can grow up with a positive attitude to gender issues.
