CHURCH CAPACITY BUILDING FOR HIV/AIDS

Highlands, Momase and Southern Region rural focus HIV/AIDS leadership workshops was held 25-30 July. It was the first of its kind in the CBC churches.

Community Services Network Program (CSNP) Chairman Pastor Wengi appreciated the 26 participants from church pastors, clinical nurses, youth, sport associations, women’s groups, Bible schools, literacy teachers, elementary school teachers and community societies.

These small groups in various locations carry out awareness, care and counseling and blood testing but are not being recognized by health agencies, National AIDS Council or bigger organizations.

The main focus of the training was to build the capacity for NAC’s NHS plan, financial management, acquittals, budgeting, strategic planning, HIV/AIDS problems and reporting to partner NGOs.

HIV/AIDS is not private business. It is everybody’s business. It requires partnership and collaboration.

COMMENT: This is the way of the future. Let us hope that more and more churches build their role in bringing together a wide range of voluntary individuals.

The time has come when foreign consultancy organizations are thanked for their contribution and allowed to go home. There is nothing complex about HIV/AIDS.

How many foreign agencies seek funding to pay executive wages to senior staff while workers receive no pay what ever? This is injustice.

More than anything else, we need networking among the church groups. There was a time when certain churches would not talk to one another. Now more and more, the AIDS pandemic is bringing churches closer together.
