WHO TRAINS MARRIAGE COUNSELORS?

For many years, AIDS Holistics has been advocating the importance of the churches in promoting the strong family as a key to the community withstanding the AIDS pandemic.

But the question arises as to whether or not the churches are able to take up such a role. Do the clergy of churches have any training in family issues? Are they skilled in marriage counseling?

Too many churches train their pastors in preaching the word of God. But there is little training in marriage and family.

Ask any pastor to talk about HIV/AIDS and he will immediately break into a sermon on loving Jesus. No pastor, please talk about family. I am talking about family. And Jesus is the head of the family.

There is so much in Scripture on family. Jesus spoke of marriage and adultery. Proverbs and Psalms tell about loving family. St Paul writes about husbands and wives and the importance of raising children.

But there needs to be special training on family and marriage. The perfect organization to do this is the Civil Registry of the Department for Community Development that already conducts courses for clergy to become marriage celebrants.

The courses are mainly about the clergyman performing marriage. They learn of their role in registering births, deaths and marriage which are key functions in recording the affairs of the nation.

Each marriage performs require counseling in marriage by the marriage celebrant. And that is where a marriage counseling course comes in. Men and women can be counseled on their roles as husbands, wives, fathers and mothers.

This need not be done on a couple-to-couple basis. Pastors could become trained to conduct marriage awareness courses within the church. Engaged couples and married couples could attend in a weekend retreat.

Pastors could be more specific in preaching about family from the pulpit every Sabbath. They could focus on family agape love. They could talk on violence between spouses. There is so much help that a church can give.

The Department for Community Development has so many counselors experienced in family problems. They are often Christian and the perfect people to train the churches in family matters. It is their natural role, having family as their key focus in their work.
