There have been violent incidents in recent years caused by people making and showing caricatures of Mohammed.
It gave the world the chance to make eloquent statements about freedoms of speech and expression. The President of France saw the recent killing of a teacher as an attack on France.
I wish it had never happened. But there is a certain amount of hypocrisy on this issue. In all my life, I have never seen a caricature of Jesus.
What would happen if there was ridicule of Jesus in a cartoon? The Christian world would go ape. So too a caricature of Gautama Buddha.
We need to take care in our respect for other faiths.
Imagine a painting of the Last Supper with disciples holding tankards of beer and Jesus dancing on the table with Mary Magdalene.
I for one would be angry. We would hope that the leader of the country would settle the issue down not stir the faithful into action.
It is not a matter of freedom of expression. Faith is more than that. It is an issue of common humanity.
