TEACHING TOK PISIN BY RHYTHM PHONICS

Rhythm phonics puts no pressure and maximum achievement on students. All students passed the standard at the RAAF School of languages. It will be the same with elementary students in Papua New Guinea.

Teaching English to PNG elementary students is not my first experience with Rhythm Phonics. For 14 years, I conducted Tok Pisin courses of 4 weeks duration at the RAAF School of Languages at Point Cook in Melbourne. Over 4000 defence personnel attended.

Tok Pisin is a beautiful and smooth language that runs on weak-strong stresses. I found that many defence personnel were not skilled in high school grammar. So I taught Tok Pisin without theory and total focus on rhythm patterns.

The result would be that after all these years, many past defence students will have never forgotten the patterns they learned that formed the basis of their Tok Pisin usage in Papua New Guinea. I have never forgotten the bush poems my father taught me at 7 years old.

The Rhythm Phonics in teaching English in PNG schools will have the  same effect. It is perfect for teaching English to elementary school children in this country as it was for teaching Tok Pisin to Australian defence personnel.

Languages of the world are rhythmic and poetic. PNG students may never learn that about English without rhythm phonics.

We used to say that Tok Pisin has been bastardized by expatriates who have not attended the Tok Pisin course. Now Tok Pisin is being bastardized by young Papua New Guinea people and losing its sweet touch.
