FEVER AFTER HIV INFECTION

We are told that within 2-3 weeks after HIV infection, the sufferer experiences fever. Why does this happen?

There is only one major event that occurs within 2 weeks of the infection with HIV. That is the attack on the gut lining. The major accumulation of CD4 cells in the body is in the gut lining protecting the body from the bacteria that enters the body with the food.

Much of the bacteria is digested as it is made of protein. But some makes it through to the small intestine. When the HIV gathers at the gut lining, the virus is engulfed by the CD4 cells anchored in the gut wall.

Soon replication takes place and thousands upon thousands of a new generation of HIV burst out for the very first time. This may be the cause of the fever.

The broken gut allows the massive entry of bacterial waste from the gut into the blood. This may be the cause of fever. The gut is always leaking from other infections. But the HIV attack causes a massive break-down of the gut lining.

All the more reason why the sufferer should commence ARV treatment before the gut is annihilated.

There is ongoing destruction of the gut lining as the cells are replaced and destroyed anew by new generations of ARV. That goes on until the body is depleted of protein. The ARV outnumbers the CD4 in the end.

That is why the absorption of nutrients, water and salts can go on for several years before being finally stopped by complete breakdown of the gut wall.
