MEN ABUSE WOMEN

heterosexual, gay, lesbian

We all know of the violence of heterosexual men to their women. It can occur in up to 40% of marriages in Papua New Guinea. To a lesser extent, we know of violence of women to men.

Particularly in the highlands, women can be strong and aggressive and be ready to throw the first punch or the first rock. They will be ready to smash the windscreen of their husband’s car.

At times, the fighting between a highlands man and his wife can take the form of a couple of fighters slugging it out toe to toe. Women can have much more subtle ways to abuse a man.

Where is my dinner? Go and get No. 2 wife to cook your dinner. She gets more money than me. Where is my white shirt? Go and tell No. 3 wife to do your washing.

We need to understand that the “man-woman” relationship between gay couples and lesbian couples can follow the same pattern. One gay may be the husband and aggressive. The wife is often the female gay who is submissive.

The aggressive husband can be violent and abusive to his wife. Less so, a wife can be abusive to an aggressive husband but in not so violent ways.

The same can apply in a lesbian relationship. One can be the aggressive husband while the other is the submissive wife.

Nomatter how much lesbian advisors will talk about heterosexual violence to women, the fact is that lesbian “husbands” can follow the same violent and abusive path.

In Papua New Guinea it is often older expatriate women bashing and abusing young national girls.

There can be massive violence between husbands and their wives in gaols across the world. A man need not be gay but will choose a feminine looking boy to share his bed and be his sex partner.

Men are men regardless of whether or not they are “imitation” men. Gay and lesbian violence is not much different from heterosexual violence.
