RESPONSIBILITIES OF OLDER CHILDREN

Young children have few responsibilities and are just required by family to be happy, play and be well behaved. Young children still tend to be egocentric and selfish and cry and scream to get what they want. But this subsides as the child grows past 6 years old

The time is coming when they should have basic responsibilities with the understanding that they are still young and will lose interest and walk away. That is acceptable.

Older children slowly take on a range of self-help chores for which they become responsible:

(a) look after their hygiene and health,
(b) keep their room tidy,
(c) help keep the house clean,
(d) wash and dry the dishes,
(e) complete their homework,
(f) iron their school uniform,
(g) look after younger children,
(h) escort the children to school,
(i) help with the cooking,
(j) help in the family business,

farm, fishery, poultry, car repair, shop,
gardening.

The problem with the UNICEF Declaration of Family Rights and Responsibilities is that it sets out a wide range of rights for children, a small range of family responsibilities.

But the UNICEF Declaration makes parents have the main responsibility of making sure that the children achieve all their rights with very few responsibilities. None of the children’s rights according to UNICEF involve chores in the house.

Perhaps the UNICEF Declaration was compiled by kids. Or by middle-class brats who left all the chores to their mothers. The rights and responsibilities is the decision of PNG family adults.
