When I explain this to school students, I liken the body to a castle. It has guards on every entrance and exit. There are also guards that float around passage ways of the castle. Their job is to block intruders.
So too there are guards in the main entrances of the body. These are embedded in mucosal layers of mouth, anus, penis and vagina. They are at the end of small canals that lead up into the lymph system.
Once a virus or germ is identified by the helper cells and engulfed by mucosal guard cells, these then pass to the collector organs which are the tonsils in the mouth and the lymph nodes in the groin. The groin lymph cells take care of the mucosa cells in the penis, anus and vagina.
These then pass upwards by two main lymph vessels that empty into the two main veins of the heart or vena cavae. The HIV virus then passes around in the blood.
But the HIV is intended by the helper white cells to pass to the next major collection of mucosa cells which are guarding the small intestine and embedded in the gut wall. Here the virus does not attack. It only seems to. It is engulfed by the mucosa cells of the gut and replicates in millions.

That is why the sufferer has to start the ARV early. If the virus is killed in the blood, there will be no attack on the gut.
The gut wall has a chance to mend provided there is strong nutrition.

The mucosa cells of the gut die once the HIV retrovirus has produced millions of HIV cells. The gut wall has been breached and will continue to do so as new viral cells come to reproduce in the remaining mucosa cells. These have to be stopped. The attack starts within 2-3 weeks after infection.
