We are learning only from expatriate advisors that the punitive and homophobic laws have to be removed so that HIV positive gay PNG men will not be afraid to go for treatment and counselling. They imply that any gay man will be reported by the doctor to the police.
What complete nonsense !! PNG people could not care less about laws laid down in the colonial era on gay sex. These laws were set in place against the expatriate gays who flooded to PNG for sex with the native boys.
The administration could not care less about gay sex among native boys that would have been going on for thousands of years. But foreign advisors believe that the old laws have to be removed if they are to propose new laws on same -sex marriage and gay and lesbian adoption of children.
Gay men have long been part of Pacific culture and have taken their place among families who turned a blind eye to sex as they grew to manhood.
