KEEP OUTCOME BASED EDUCATION

Outcome Based Education (OBE) should be kept but its rationale, strategies and teaching techniques should be revised and promoted to teachers' colleges, schools and teachers.

Many teachers would not understand what it was all about. Many would think it was all about research. All we have to do is examine present textbooks to realize that present OBE is all about research and reading to understand with no focus on the basics.

Many students could not write a sentence to express their ideas. Many teachers do not have the academic skill, subject knowledge, professional outlook or patience with students to be able to help.

OBE is all about Mastery Learning by which the students practise sequences of exercises. The teacher demonstrates the first exercise. The students and teacher complete the next. The students master the next 3.

Then the teacher demonstrates the next that is slightly more complex. The students practise. That is Mastery Learning.

I knew a teacher who explained that he only teaches a concept to students once. If they do not understand, it is because they were not listening. That was an insult to the teacher's professionalism if explanation had to be given again.

He would make a lousy OBE teacher. He would have been better suited to husking coconuts in a village. As a Mastery Learning teacher, I would have sequences of exercises ready prepared to be used over a three week period and for further practice until the end of the term.

Some students may need to practise with teacher guidance many times until the penny dropped.
