GOVERNOR GENERAL ON GENDER

The Papua New Guinea Governor General Sir Michael Ogio has made the following statement:

"The past three decades in the world has witnessed a steady increase in awareness on empowering women, through measures to increase social, economic and political equity and broader access to fundamental human rights, improvements in nutrition, basic health and education".

Gender is not synonymous with women nor is it a zero sum game, implying loss for men. Rather it refers to both women and men and their status relative to one another.".

Gender equality refers to that stage of human development at which rights, responsibilities and opportunities of individuals will not be determined by being born male or female".

Comment: UN and AusAID female advisors need to be reminded that gender is not just another name for lesbian rights at the expense of men. It is not just for lesbians, women in general and girls. It is for us all.
