STYLISH MOSLEM WOMEN

In my personal library in downtown Port Moresby, there is a book entitled "Reading Lolita in Tehran" by Azar Nafisi - ISBN 0 7336 1823 5

It tells of a university lecturer in Tehran who had female students come to her home to discuss literature in a book group. All kinds of books were discussed and with it came a view of the world and personal values.

The young women removed their burqas in the security of the house. These women were stylishly dressed with lovely western clothes, earrings and hair styling. In so many ways, women are women and have similar interests in personal style.

But for these Moslem women, their style was only for the eyes of women not men outside the family. They came away from the book group with a broad understanding of human values but a commitment to Islam.

This book was beautifully written as if by an author with English as a first language.

Footnote: This report was completed with the Google report above without our realizing that the book is the subject of controversy in the Moslem world.

Our interest is not on the Iran-Iraq war that is now part of history. We were saddened by the destruction of a generation of young men on both sides.

We were more interested in reading of a group of young Moslem women and seeing them as people. That is the greatest honour that can be done to a human being.

They read Charles Dickens books from the 19th century that focused on human relations and the ways that people can be mistreated. The book Lolita is the story of a paedophile who deeply damages a young girl.

AIDS Holistics has written extensively on the abuse of children by paedophiles in western countries. We focus on family that is the key to living in all religious faiths including Islam and Christianity.
