HIGH COST OF LIVING BRINGS SEX WORK

There is a front page report in the Papua New Guinea Post Courier 4 October 2012 of the increase in men women and children being involved in sex work to help their families meet the rising cost of living.

A number of NGOs have compiled a report to present to the Government in the hope that something can be done about it.

In Port Moresby, there are 14 sites where sex workers do business, exchanging sex for money, food, school fees or other gifts from time to time.

The report says that Port Moresby has three categories of sex workers that involve men, women and children.

The first group consists of high profile working men and women involved in sex work for family and to support them in living beyond their means.

The second group are public servants struggling to maintain their families.

The third group consists of those who work in nightclubs, babysitting and in settlements who have no other means to support themselves. Sex work is the main and only means of support for these people.

Comment: What can the Government do? Reduce the cost of living? Provide employment? Provide soup kitchens? increase the distribution of condoms? Provide sex education?

But the old saying remains that the poor will always be with us. What can be done? Some people have no desire to work. Some are unable to work.

Giving food support is fraught with problems. If a kind person took a child to the house to give food, the child would return the next day with two friends. They would all come back the next day with 10 friends.

Within a week, there would be 50 children with adults. There would be demands from some until the kind person stopped all distribution after a fortnight.

Churches have centres for distribution of food. But the people who come have to be referred by a church or care centre with a voucher to be signed each day.
