Papua new Guinea is a social mess. There is an AIDS pandemic that threatens us all. Yet in a population of 6 million, there are loving and caring families and families being destroyed by violence and abuse.

So far the national HIV/AIDS foreign advisors have focused on the violence of men and nothing on the loving and caring husbands and fathers.

Equally there is no focus on the violence of women including expatriate lesbian women who bash their lesbian wives and gay men who bash their gay wives.

Many men do not work and take money from where they can. Some will expect their wives to earn the family money by working in gardens and selling fruit and vegetables in the market. The man will believe that as head of the house, he has the right to control such money.

Some men have working wives and girlfriends and expect to take their ATM cards to control their fortnight pay. They regard this pay as belonging to the man. Women can beg their own pay from the man.

Some men want their girlfriends to take their name to give them access to the superannuation that they think they can take.

Some women sell their bodies to buy food and clothing for their children. They may be bashed by their husbands who are happy to take the money but violent in accepting that their wives are seeking sex with other men.

Many women and young girls are seeking sex and money by mobile phones. Some will focus on expatriate men who they know will probably not bash them.

Some men are policemen whose job is to protect women from violence. At the same time, these policemen bash their own wives.

Many men and women do not work on the basis that violence does not produce loving and caring families. There are also violent women who bash their husbands particularly women from the highlands, many of whom are built like a brick outhouse.

Some men are starting to complain that the legislation against violence to women is destroying their marriage. They claim the right to bash their wives.

Some men have several wives. Life can become hell on earth for both the man and the women. The wives learn to make life miserable for the man.

So relationships between men and women in Papua New Guinea can be marked by confrontation and hostility. It is not just a matter of foreign lesbians teaching women to be individuals with rights. They have to teach the men. It is all about family.
