WORLD AIDS DAY 2020

There are more people infected with HIV in Papua New Guinea than those infected with COVID 19. There are 52,000 people infected in this country and 9 infected every day.

The Country Director of UNAIDS David Bridger writes in The National of the importance of shared responsibility. It is sad to read of HIV infected people who are kicked out of their families. Let us hope they are in a minority.

There should be more advice given out to the community including the problems with default with ART,  PEP treatment for girls within 72 hours after rape and the dangers of smoking and boozing while on ART medication.

Some of the most obvious advice never hits the media.

The following article was published by Bruce Copeland, a former Australian Army officer now living in PNG – it is a timely reminder for Australian trekkers considering a local PNG trekking company to save money.

ALMOST TREKKED KOKODA

I would like to tell a story mainly for PNG villagers who may plan to set up a trekking group either for Kokoda or Black Cat Tracks. They are all a long way from Port Moresby and a group of Australian trekkers waiting to leave.

I already have explained to Malum Nalu why I would never trek with a village group. It is all about their not being reliable and professional enough. There are too many stuff-ups to stuff up.

Last week, I was approached by a PNG man and asked to be the team leader for his trek starting Sunday. He asked me my rates. I told him that I am paid good money by the expatriate trekking groups. It is fund raising for AIDS awareness.

But I would drop my price for a village trekking group. He had asked me once before but I could not trek. He is known to me on the Track. And he spends much time in the email shop.

He suggested K300 a day for 7 days. That sounded OK. I am doing him a favour. I said I have all the gear except a personal back pack. 

He had one. We agreed to meet two days later at the email shop.

We met and his first words were that he would drop the rate to K150 a day. Was it OK? Not really. He said that he would let me have a personal backpack for K50 a day. 

I was losing interest in the man. He said he would make an advance and come to give it to me at the e-mail shop that afternoon.

I came half an hour late but he had not arrived. We met next day by accident and he introduced me to three young village men who were to come to make sure that I did the right thing. 

I sent him a text later to say I was no longer available. I told him that I was probably the only white man who would ever trek for him.

There are a number of issues here. In PNG, there is the attitude among many PNG businessmen that the key to being successful is to lie, cheat and keep changing the goal posts. Not with this white man. 

After dropping the price from K300 to K150, I would not put it past him to refuse to pay at the end or drop the price to K50 a day. Take out the rent for the back pack which would be K200 for the week. Take it or leave it, white man.

Then there is another factor. I have experienced many men over the years who stop me in the street and tell me they want a meeting with me to discuss a business issue.They are probably after a free business lunch. 

My response is always positive. I say “My friend, I am very busy at the moment. Come to my house next Friday and talk to me”. 

The fact is they never know where I live and never come. We both smile. The first wanted me to be manager of his security firm. But he did not have an office, vehicle, contracts or guards. Haha.

That was my job. And no pay for me until I set it all up. Crazy. Next wanted me to be Director of his AIDS care group. He has land and is waiting for the funding. 

He has been stopping and telling me that for 2 years. I shake his hand and wish him well. He stopped last  week and advised someone was trying to steal his land. Progress at last !!

I think my Kokoda trekking man is number three. If not, the village trekking groups have much to learn.

I would not dare ask about hotel booking, arriving aircraft, purchase of rations, assembly of trekkers, casualty evacuation arrangements, aircraft ration drops, payment to villagers, arrival of aircraft, radio communications and disputes with villagers.

Another problem is that villagers know little or nothing of the detail of the Kokoda campaign. It is not their fault but Australian trekking groups need detail in English. What happened here ? bikpela pait.

Still, "what happened here?" can be a pain in the butt question from Australians too. Some trekkers think that the team leader has every metre of the track covered. What happened here? Aussies were retreating. What were the Japanese doing? They were advancing.

I was once sitting at the Isurava battlefield with a trekking group when a village group arrived. The trekkers wanted to know what happened here. The village trek leader had no idea of the significance of this central battle site. After 10 minutes he made the move to leave. He was retreating.

Our group stayed the night and held a remembrance service in the morning.  That is how Australians do it.

On another occasion, I listened to a so-called PNG village expert briefing a trekking group at a hotel. He was telling about the massive battle on the Eora plateau between Australian and Japanese troops. The Japanese swept down on the Australians from Mt Bellamy.

Thousands of Japanese died. What absolute rubbish !! He missed the point of the Australian withdrawal to Owers Corner. The strategy of Kokoda-Buna-Gona is quite basic. Perhaps he was confused with the battle on Brigade Hill.

There should be a village trekking school to prepare village groups for all the detail related to a safe and credible trek in English and Tok Pisin. But the village trekking groups still have to get all the administrative arrangements right.

BETRAYING KOKODA TREKKING AND AIDS AWARENESS

In 2002, AIDS Holistics was banned by the AusAID scumbags Cox and Watson. They objected to my focus on FAMILY and FAITH. 

My work permit and visa were corruptly cancelled by Watson and I was expected to move out of the country and leave Positive Living behind.

I had two small daughters whom I would not leave behind as a single parent. Having to send them to school, I need money to live that came with my military pension. 

But I needed money to promote Positive Living which I achieved by being a Kokoda trek leader.

That lasted for only 3 years when I was seriously injured by falling from a cliff on the Kokoda Track and damaging my sciatic nerve which remains damaged today.

But then I came across Malum Nalu who wanted me to reject trekking by Australian groups to enable village trekking to start probably with Nalu running a village trekking group. I had experience with village trekking before and found it to be full of problems and stuff-ups.

In the days before cell phones, there was no way for Australians to book trekking with someone living in a village. Hotel bookings were a problem. So too the village porters who had to arrive at the start of the trek in time. 

There were problems with purchase of food and food drops by aircraft along the track. Casualty evacuation of trekkers had to be arranged with  helicopter companies. 

There would be rivalry and violence between villager trekking groups. Villages would make demands for money for trekkers to pass along their section of the track. 

The track would be closed from time to time forcing trekkers to turn back. We saw a village attack on trekkers on the Black Cat Track. I wrote a report on Google. It is posted above.

Then journalist with the Post Courier Simon Ororo started a series in the media calling for the track to be closed down to Australian groups. I was horrified and sent an email disagreeing with his small boy plan.

With that, Malum Nalu joined the debate and demanded that I be deported. That died a natural death.

Nalu seemed determined to punish me by destroying the Positive Living campaign. AIDS Holistics led the field as it still does today. AIDS awareness is more important than Kokoda trekking.

Nalu had been involved in a dispute with two expatriate activists Kailap and Sullivan who gave him a hard time. They opposed what they called illegal logging of Rimbunan Hijau at Pomio. 

So Nalu decided to combine the two issues by having Copeland accused of sexually abusing these women with an email brucecopeland65@gmail.com. 

It all came crashing down when Lydia Kailap sent a message to PNG Attitude to explain that Copeland was being set up by a deranged person who misused his email address and the addressees on aholistics@hotmail.com.

Had Nalu performed in a professional way, there could have been a village Kokoda Trekking group supporting AIDS Holistics. I would have been trek leader. At the moment I am too old with sciatica. We could have set up an office in Port Moresby. My work permit would be updated.

I have sciatica from falling down a cliff on the Kokoda Track. It causes pain in my feet at night with a hideous burning in the second toe on my left leg. I sometimes feel like cutting off my toe with a bolt cutter. But the pain wiould probably not go away as I may have a permanent phantom pain.

I hope Ororo's standard of argument lifts. With no Australian trekking groups, Kokoda trekking would close when even one of a dozen stuff-ups occurred on a village trek - no food drops, no casualty evacuation by helicopter, no porters arrive at the starting rendezvous and violence among village trekking groups.

I think that Nalu has the attitude that anyone who disagrees with him - Copeland, Kailap and Sullivan have to be destroyed. So with the fake emails brucecopeland65@gmail.com he set about destroying us. He was a  gestapo journalist who did not believe in free speech.

Emails apparently from Mr Copeland to white Australian NGO woman Lydia Kaliap, exposed on Nancy Sullivan’s blog included this one: “Black cock whore! White cocks can't satisfy so you head up to PNG!”

For example: “A new STD has hit the streets of PNG! Its called "KeleGAYensis" Symptoms included: flashing breasts at tourists and then demanding money fingering onesself in pubic toilets whinging for money whenever you see a whiteman and shoving bananas up your vagina when nobody is looking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

It is likely that Mr Copeland does not offer details and substance because he either does not know his intended victims or knew them only briefly and thus has little factual information to offer.

If he has legitimate complaints against the people he rubbishes and would lay out the allegations in a normal, mature way, offering details, his postings would probably not be an issue to anyone but those accused of wrong doing. But he does not do that.

Postings like the one above remove all doubt that these words are coming from an Australian expat who has now started stereotyping and rubbishing Papua New Guineans in general.

In the years I spent as an army officer at Igam Barracks, I took officer cadets to the meeting of the Morobe and District Historical Society with the president Phillip Holzknecht.

Students learned much about the history of New Guinea. The most interesting was Salamaua town that grew out of the gold mining days at Edie Creek. It was the spring board of much history involving Australians. 

There was the Kaisenik massacre that was a punitive raid by miners against the killing of new miners on the Black Cat Track. The area faced severe combat against the Japanese. The town was destroyed by Japanese fighters.

There were old people who came and talked about life on Salamaua. It was a centre point for the social activities with aircraft flying in to enjoy the social activities on the weekend. There were few other centres for the expatriates.

Salamaua was the port for embarkation and disembarkment of miners leaving and departing from Edie Creek. There was a hospital, radio station, hotel, bank, post office and shops where miners collected their grub stake. There were weekend houses and a busy airstrip.

I wrote a report on PNG Attitude. Many people who had never been there ridiculed the suggestion of social events involving boater hats and white trousers with ties and long white dresses for the women.

I was repeating the reports from the historical society meetings, led by former Salamaua resident Bert Weston.

The person who came to my support was Malum Nalu who was born in Salamaua. I thought he was my friend. He wanted us to promote the Black Cat Track together.

But the attack against the trekking group on the Black Cat Track spoiled trekking on the track probably permanently. 

MALUM NALU - CYBER BULLY OF WOMEN

I can never forgive or forget Malum Nalu who as a senior journalist with The National was involved in opposing the objections of two women Lydia Kailap and Nancy Sullivan as activists against the Rimbunan Hijau logging in Pomio.

Malum Nalu was bullying them and went to Pomio to sort the matter out. But he failed badly and was criticized by Nancy in a blog report 19 Years and counting in PNG.

He decided that he was showing himself up in a poor light. So he pretended to make peace with the two women but sent filthy emails to them under fake address brucecopeland65 @gmail.com.

Since the founder of AIDS Holistics was being falsely bullied by AusAID and UN scumbags for bullying women and sexual abuse of girls, Nalu decided to push all his crimes on to Copeland. 

AusAID scumbags wanted to crush the Positive Living message to replace with a gay, lesbian and paedophile agenda.

To cover up that there were only two women, Nalu sent reports to the addressees of aholistics@hotmail.com. He said there were several other women in Australia. That made them uncheckable.

But Lydia spoiled his plans by sending a report to PNG Attitude advising that Copeland was not involved.

I will never forgive the treachery of Nalu who put himself forward as my friend. There is an old saying that sometimes our friends can be our worst enemies. Why did his wife die?

I can never forgive the damage he tried to do to Positive Living. We were in the middle of a AIDS pandemic with many people dying and still dying. But they were not important to Nalu. 

My son and his mother died of AIDS. I went on with Positive Living in honour of their memory.

Positive Living is now part of PNG culture. We read about healthy living in the two newspapers of PNG and the pages of Google that is the most amazing source of information on the planet.

AIDS Holistics has begun cutting and pasting reports from the media and Google. Let the AusAID and UN scumbags say that Positive Living is all rubbish.

When a girls is raped, then the attacker may be (1) HIV positive or (2) HIV negative. If positive, the victim will become HIV positive if she waits or ignores any testing. If negative, she is OK but how does she know?

She goes to the AIDS clinic or hospital for a PEP test within 72 hours of the rape. She is given ART medication to take for a month. This report comes from a poster on the wall at the ANGAU clinic in Lae. 

If negative, she is OK. If positive, the virus will be cleaned out by the PEP ART medication. But the woman must go for treatment within 72 hours. After that time if positive, the virus will enter the lymph internal organs and remain. 

She is now HIV positive. She can take ART to destroy the virus in the blood and lymph vessels but not in the lymph hiding places. The virus stays to burst out with default in ART medication.

I used to tell my daughters that if they are raped, not to be ashamed to tell their father. He will not scream and bash them but take them straight to the medical centre for PEP.
