WORLD ANTIBIOTICS AWARENESS WEEK 18 -24 NOVEMBER

 The National 18 November 2020

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses change after being exposed to antimicrobial drugs.

These changes can mean they become resistant to the drugs being used to treat them.

There are different types of anti-microbials which work against different types of microorganisms eg antibacterials or antibiotics against bacteria, antivirals against viruses, antifungals against fungi.

Antibiotic Resistance is caused by persistent overuse or misuse of antibiotics in human or animal health.

Antibiotics only work against bacterial infection. Inappropriate antibiotic use raises the risk of antibiotic resistance which puts everyone at risk even with mild infections.

Correct diagnosis is vital for treatment. Testing helps us distinguish between bacterial and viral infections.
