FIGHTING BAD CHOLESTEROL

Post Courier 12 November 2020

There is an amazing report in the Post Courier today that make me go back to the start with new knowledge.

It is about the fat carrying particles that are loaded up in the liver before being transported around the body. Some are called triglyceride fats.

The report tells that fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers. These contain vitamins, minerals and plant chemicals called sterols and stanols which help us to stay healthy and prevent disease.

The majority of fruits and vegetables contain little or no fat and are low in calories and help us keep a healthy weight. If you are eating more fruit and vegetables, you are not eating energy packed foods.

Fruit and vegetables are high in fibre and some types of fibre can help us lower our cholesterol levels. Fibre helps block some cholesterol from being absorbed from the intestine into the blood.

Pulses such as beans, peas, lentils are high in this kind of fibre. Sweet potato, okra, broccoli, apples, strawberries and prunes are good options.

I will write more on this in weeks to come. I have already mentioned the fat moving from the small intestine up the lymphatic vessels to the heart before moving down to the liver.

I reminded readers of fat in sheep hearts in trays of the supermarkets. Perhaps the Post Courier will write more in weeks to come. I will keep you posted.
