MALNUTRITION IN PACIFIC CHILDREN

 The National 17 November 2020

Pacific children are being irreversibly damaged by malnutrition in the Pacific. Most Pacific countries have high numbers of overweight and obese children over 5 years of age.

These included Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kirabati, Nauru, Palau, Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomons, Tonga and Tuvalu.

There were high rates of anemia, a reduction in red blood cells often caused by an iron deficiency.

Dr Ibrahim Dadari said that stunting slowed the child's growth and mental processes and left children susceptible to illnesses. It was incredible that a region with such abundance of fresh produce and sea food had such high levels of malnutrition.

The real problem is that overweight children were being fed on Milo and sweetened drinks according to leading Pacific Health expert Dr Collin Tukuitonga.

Note: There is a young boy living down the road from me. He is 10 years old and looks like Humpty Dumpty.

I asked him the other day and he says his favourite food is soft drink and Twisties. He is on his way to an early death in a few years time. He is obese and suffering from malnutrition. Stupid parents.
