HOMEBREW, BLINDNESS AND DEATH

Papua New Guinea: The National 19 May 2011

Homebrew: Is it a ticking time bomb. Dr Uma Ambihaipahar
principal advisor social change and mental health – consultant
psychiatrist.

I will discuss what parents, the community and government can do
to institute remedial steps.

Our concerns on homebrewing are whether or not we are drinking
ethanol or methanol.

Ethanol abuse and intoxication can lead equally to many medical,
physical, psychological and social complications.

Methanol is poisonous, dangerous and fatal. It is a clear, colourless,
flammable liquid with a slight alcoholic smell. It is made by reacting
hydrogen with carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide.

It used to be made from distilling wood and became known as wood
alcohol. It is used in production of paints, solvents, varnishes, thinners
and windscreen wash.

Drinking can cause serious health impairment such as blindness and
death. Methanol will be broken down in the small intestine to formic
acid and formaldehyde.

Both are poisonous and can bring headaches, dizziness, indigestion
and damage to brain and nerves.

Other symptoms are leg cramps, blindness, abdominal cramps, speech
impairment, fainting, breathing problems, asthma, lethargy, confusion,
joint aches and lower back pains
