PEACE AND ORDER START IN THE FAMILY

Statement by police commander 5 May 2011

The corner-stone to a peaceful and law abiding community begins
in the family unit according to the Morobe Provincial Commander
Peter Guiness.

Supt Guinness said lawlessness in society was the responsibility
of every citizen in any given locality and should not be thrust on
the police.

Following two pay-back killings last week, He told the crowd
that they should seriously think of consequences of any action.

Think about your families before you give in to the pressures of
other people or joining other groups. Ask yourself who will look
after your sons? Who will take care of your wives and daughters?

He said that most recent ethnic clashes were the result of youths
not having respect for the law and for society at large.

Where do values start? They start with you and me as responsible
adults. We have the responsibility to teach them – our children and
young ones the values of respect for society, the rule of law and
respect for life.

He urged people not to waste their lives in vain for something that
so easily have been avoided.

We are our own worst enemies. We create incidents and expect
police and other law enforcement agencies to fix all the problems.
If we are serious about maintaining the rule of law and order in
societies, then we start in our homes, our clans, our tribes and
community.
