RUNT OF THE LITTER

We all know that when a litter of puppies is born there is always
one puppy that is weak and eventually dies. Why is that so? It
is all about the fact that the puppy was born last and did not have
its first drink of mother’s milk.

It is very important for a puppy to drink the first creamy milk known
as colostrum that is rich in antibodies. A baby has no immune system
for many months and relies on antibodies that come from the mother
through the milk.

A baby puppy that misses out on mother’s milk in the fight for survival
with other puppies will always be weak and will die.

The same applies to the babies of human mothers. They need mother’s
milk. Human babies are not born with a litter of babies.

So they are not the runt of the litter. Without the antibodies of the mother,
they just become the runt. That means that they are the weak one. Milk
out of a tin is not the same.
