FANTASY ON GENDER VIOLENCE

We read an advertisement in The National 31 October 2011 from UN Women seeking a fabulously qualified person to investigate and record gender violence against women and girls in and around markets of Port Moresby.

This is based on fantasy from the Director of UN Women who spent a week investigating markets several months ago. She also makes claims of women accused of witchcraft being buried alive. No proof ever offered.

Several years ago, her fertile mind produced a book on women being trafficked for sex in the vanilla trade in the Sepik. Her book was even condemned by the then Minister for Community Development Dame Carol Kidu as being false. Any rubbish will do.

While in PNG recently, she fired her investigative scatter gun over sorcery killings and saw these as gender based.

Sorcery is not gender based. Both men and women die. In some areas there are mainly men. In others there are mainly women.

I have lived in Port Moresby for 11 years and have gone to Gordons Market or Malaoro Market every day for fruit and vegetables. I saw one young man steal a bag. A policeman bashed an old man.

Then recently I saw a man bashed by a woman. There were murders of men in Gordons Market in recent months but that was very much a one off situation involving clan warfare.

The successful applicant will be the UN Women woman on the ground reporting back on the activities of women in the lead up to the 2012 elections. Tricky.

UN Women undoubtedly want a place in the 22 seats with a further promotion of the elected woman to be Minister for Community Development.
