CYCLES IN MASTERY LEARNING

Let us pretend that Mastery Learning is now in place in Papua New Guinea schools.

The Department of Education has prepared sequences of mastery exercises for English, Mathematics, Social Science, Science and Health. All have been validated by grade teachers.

Grade 5 has 20 sequences of 30 exercises for English each with 30 graded exercises. That is 600 exercises to be completed in one year. The students have already completed 15 sequences of exercises in each year from elementary to grade 4.

In each set of 30 exercises, there are 10 for teacher demonstration and  20 for student practice. This is classical Mastery Learning. The 20 sets of exercises are completed in one school year. This gives time for cyclic revision.

Once the teacher assesses that a sequence is 100% correct in student completion, revision can be refocused on any sequences giving problems. It may be that on the first run, students will be 60% correct. But that should rise to 100% after revision during the year.

If all classes in Papua New Guinea have the same Mastery sequences at the grade level, the Department can have an accurate expectation of achievement grade by grade. Preparation of Mastery sequences has not been left to the teacher although the teachers are free to design supplementary exercises.

Every teacher has the teachers' book in English Mastery for all grades so that they can see their grade in a wider context.

On completion of the exercises, the Grade 5 students are ready to move to Grade 6. Here greater emphasis will be placed on complex sentences, combining sentences, reading comprehension, vocabulary and essay writing.
