WHY AGE OF CONSENT RAISED?

In many countries, the age of consent of children has been raised as a matter of rights and gender equity. Girls had the right to grow up before motherhood. Their bodies had the time to mature. Young girls having regular sexual intercourse are susceptible to vaginal cancer.

Girls in particular had the right to go to school and complete higher studies without having to be involved with marriage and childbirth. They had the right to seek employment.

Status of women is low in some countries with a lowering of the age of consent. This is particularly so in a number of Middle East countries where fathers have their child wed at the age of 9 years to a 10 year old boy. If she rejects this, she is liable to accusation of adultery and punishment.

Lesbian activists who focus on women's rights should insist on the raising of the age of consent for girls. They should oppose the campaign of paedophiles to lower or remove the age of consent.
