LAW OF DIMINISHING RETURNS

The report below by Robin Lillicrap refers to a conspiracy to dumb down education. It may be that the process is simpler in PNG over the last 40 years. First teachers were expatriates who were trained in the old way of teaching basics. Many PNG teachers carried the flag and kept the standard high.

As time went on, there were younger overseas teachers who brought the new approach of downgrading the importance of basics. They taught students and the standard dropped. The students became teachers and taught students and the standard dropped further. This is the Law of Diminishing Returns.

This went on until today the standard is rock bottom in many schools. Teachers had difficulty with their own English and subject knowledge. Vernacular language has dropped the standard further.

As a teacher in Morobe High Schools in the 1990s, I was given grade 9 English in all classes. This was an acknowledgement that as an expatriate, I would lift the standard. It is not boasting but reality. This is what happened but the duration was too short to have long-term benefit.

The PNG Department of Education needs to lift the standard starting with the Schools of Excellence and the elementary schools and working towards the middle.
