MASTERY LEARNING IN CLAUSES AND PHRASES

It is difficult to believe that in the post-Sputnik era of the 1950s, the teachers ofr the United States, Australia and other nations decided that the skills and knowledge below were not relevant to education.

Children were not to learn the basics of English by study of basics but were to learn to read by reading and write by writing. This was the start of the dumbing down of national education.

So let us start again with the basic structure of English.

Clauses have subjects and verbs.

He went to the house that Jack built.
She saw the child who was lost.
He said that he was sick.
I left the house before the rain came.
He did as he was told.
She stayed at home because she was ill.

Phrases have no subject or verb

He came at night.
They sat under the tree.
She went with her mother.
He walked quickly and quietly.
She sat beside her friend.

Clauses of time

Go inside when the door opens.
He left after the job was finished.
She spoke before the meeting started.
They argued while the meeting was being held.

Phrases of time

Go before mid-day.
He was in town during the fire.
They worked for many hours.

Clauses of place

They crossed where the river was shallow.
Put up the tent where there are no trees.
They sat where the house once stood.

Phrases of place.

They sat near the fire.
He walked under the trees.
The woman waited at the store.
The birds flew above the trees.

Clauses of reason

He went home because he was sick.
As you have done the work, please go home.

Phrases of reason

He went home because of illness.
His absence was due to illness.

Clauses of manner

They did the work as they were shown.
He responded as he was expected to do.

Phrases of manner

Do it like this.
He cleaned the equipment as shown.

Clauses of condition

Go to the hospital if you are sick.
If you do not go, you may become very sick.

Phrases of condition

If worried, talk to the teacher.
If not, please keep working.
If tired, you should rest.

The adverbial clauses and phrases could be the basis of many sequences of Mastery Learning for the grades from 7-10. These would be developed through synthesis of sentences and creative writing. The phrases and clauses can be placed in sentences in all ways of meaning.

If worried, go to the doctor who lives in town near the fire station.
I think that you are so committed that you will graduate with high honours at the end of the year.
