PHONICS WITH DR SEUSS AND CAT

How many of us in the 1960s and 1970s generation had learned phonics from the famous books by Dr Seuss and his Cat in the Hat series?

At a time when the teaching world was foolishly moving away from phonics, there were two professional educators who kept the world on track. There was Dr Seuss with Cat in the Hat and Benjamin Bloom with his Taxonomies of Educational Objectives. Bloom started earlier in 1956.

But Bloom had another reason too. The year 1956 was a year of trauma for the US Government. The Russians had just put Sputnik into outer space. How could a backward nation of peasants do that? This caused a massive soul searching of the US education system.

How could it be then that at the same time, the teachers were downgrading teaching practice. Were they deliberately sabotaging the US economic and educational policy?

Blooms Taxonomy (Cognitive Domain) took the teachers and students to the heights in putting together plans and essays with the capacity to evaluate. At the same time, he took us back to teaching the basics of spelling and phonics.

Why were so many teachers foolish people? During the 1960s when the young people were making love not war, smoking marijuana and taking LSD under the criminal stupidity of Dr Timothy Leary, the educationists were moving to remove all discipline from study.

Students were not to memorize any more. They were not to chant in class. Spellings were to be taught by reading not memorizing. No more phonics. No more grammar.

That was a plan that threw out the baby with the bath water. We are still paying the penalty. Why can teachers not just pick the best strategies from all educational practice? Teachers want to be seen as professional. Not likely.
