MASTERY LEARNING IS CIVILIZATION

There is no alternative to Mastery Learning in the civilizations of today and the past. A boy watched his father doing a job and learned. A good father would explain, demonstrate and allow the boy to practise.

His errors would be explained and the boy would practise until the task was mastered. A young girl would learn from her mother in the same way.

We have polished the Mastery Learning approach over the years. Doctors, pilots, accountants and soldiers all learn by systematic mastery.

Doctors in Papua New Guinea train with a problem based approach to recognizing symptoms, making diagnoses and treating the patient with minimal error.

Pilots are trained on flight simulators. With the wonders of modern computer technology, there are a range of scenarios built into the computer program which requires the trainee pilot to make accurate diagnoses and respond in a safe way.

Accountants are trained in keeping books of account and fault finding. They are being prepared to respond accurately to all accounting situations.

Car mechanics are trained to maintain and fault-find engines. In the real mechanical work, they should be ready to solve problems.

Soldiers are trained to carry out military tasks by solving problems that arise in training. A mastery learning Programme in Problem Solving was introduced to the Joint Services College of Papua New Guinea in 1978.

A problem in Papua New Guinea is that there is a culture in villages by which a boy watches his father doing a task but does not speak or ask questions.

He watches from the sideline until able to complete the task when his father was not there. That is Mastery Learning without demonstration or practice. No wonder many village boys sit like logs in class.

People who oppose Mastery Learning in schools may well be those teachers who are happy just to walk into class, lecture and have students write notes.

They walk out at the end of the lesson and set tests on what the students learned on the theory spoken of. That is not Mastery Learning. It is the sign of a lazy and incompetent teacher.

How would we like to be passengers in an aircraft where the pilot had been taught to fly by the theory method? And we are told that today will be his first practical landing.....help!!

How would we feel to be on the operating table to be told that the surgeon had never performed this kind of operation before? But he has had the operation explained several times. We are reassured that he was top in his class at medical school on the theory of brain surgery.....help!!
