IN YOUR OWN WORDS

A major problem in Papua New Guinea schools is the total lack of focus by teachers on having students write in their own words.

This causes students to copy word for word out of books, without necessarily understanding what is written. At university, this is called plagiarism. Many students will never have written a single thought in their own words in their own schooling.

In Mastery Learning, there needs to be extended sequences of short stories and reports for summary writing. Students could complete 300 a year every year from grades 7-12, extending in length and complexity.

Summarizing is done by removing paragraphs, detailed lists, dates, names and direct speech. Students report in brief sentences.

These exercises are not difficult for teachers to prepare and require only a book, magazine or newspaper.

Students should have long term experience in putting reports in their own words. From Grades 7 to 12, the level of sophistication will rise as students become used to what is required.
