ARE WOMEN EQUAL TO MEN?

To achieve gender equity, we have to talk to both women and men. Some men of Papua New Guinea will not accept this, believing that women become slaves to man on payment of bride price.

We have to convince women that they are equal to men. Some women have been bashed too often to believe this. They have given up and accepted the inevitable.

Other women believe that they are on a higher level than drunken, violent and womanizing men. They do not accept that men are equal. That may be a reason why many PNG women do not vote for women candidates in elections.

They reject the notion that women can leave their families and place priority on politics in the capital city. They may believe that women are better than that. Their view is expressed at the ballot box located separately from the box for men.

Have you heard the saying?

Women have to work four times more effectively to be considered half as good as men. Fortunately, it is not difficult.

There is more than a grain of truth in that, you know.
