MESSAGE TO PNG EDUCATION

Dear friends,

This nation is going through trauma of Outcome Based Education. The teachers of the nation are split on the value of the approach.

There have been other problems that have spoiled the capacity of students to read, write and understand. The most important has been the introduction of vernacular language. Students tend to write English in Tok Pisin patterns.

It all started in the 1960s when a decision was made by so-called experts to scrap all practical learning of vocabulary, spelling, sentence structure and writing.

The new approach was for students to read by reading and write by writing. The standard of both went downhill. A massive body of English teaching skills was lost.

Papua New Guinea did not lose all skills. There must have been older expatriate teachers who protected English teaching in this country. Students still learned about tense, active and passive voice, topic sentences, parts of speech, suffixes and prefixes.

But they never learned about the skills of writing. They still write baby talk based on Tok Pisin, avoid all complex sentences, repeat words mindlessly, have no idea of sentence structure and copy passages out of books without using their own words. This is called plagiarism at a later time.

If your school wishes to develop a modern writing approach, please refer to the following:
