MASTERY LEARNING NEEDS GENDER EQUITY

Male teachers tend to look at the world through the eyes of men. Female teachers look through the eyes of women. Mastery Learning design requires scenarios that focus on the issues of men and women.

This does not mean that Mastery Learning becomes a political struggle. But Mastery Learning requires that all sequences of exercises show issues of both men and women represented.

We need to be aware that if all teachers have to produce their own mastery sequences, it will all be a mess. Many teachers do not have the skill to do this. Schools will suffer from a lack of continuity between teachers.

All the more reason why all teachers should be working through a common inventory of Mastery Learning exercises. It should not produce mediocrity but considerable richness in skills, knowledge and insights.

All the more reason why there should be a Mastery Learning design team with men and women represented as professional teachers.
