EDUCATION OF MY DAUGHTERS

My two daughters went through high school in Victoria, Australia. The elder daughter wanted to be a doctor. So she completed the top stream that opened the door to the top university places. She passed the more rigorous exams but did not secure a place at the University of Melbourne in the Faculty of Medicine.

She studied to complete a Bachelor of Science and applied again, this time securing a place in the Faculty of Dentistry.

My second daughter wanted to be a teacher so she completed the less rigorous but worthwhile stream that focused on assessment by assignments. She secured a place at university in the Faculty of Education.

This stream was Outcome Based and worked well for number two daughter. She was conscientious, well read and now works as a teacher.

In Queensland in 1964, there was one stream of study going through Grade 12 and students had to be cut and pasted into those students to secure Commonwealth Scholarships and those who did not.

It came down to the fact that the brilliant students went to university, the good average students went on to teachers' college or the military and the failures went to work at Woolworths or the abattoirs.

The Victorian system was humane. PNG must not reject OBE. Perhaps 5 years preparation is in order before a modified OBE is re-introduced.
