MASTERY LEARNING IN DEPTH

A major problem in Papua New Guinea education is that students do not have the background information to benefit from new knowledge. So a useful technique has been to develop topics in depth.

Each year would provide new information to build on the foundation laid down the year before in the same topic.

There was study of tectonics begun in Grade 7 Social Science. It was developed further in Grades 8, 9 and 10. The first study in Grade 7 was just a general picture of local volcanoes and earthquakes.

But by the time the students reached Grade 10, the study of tectonics had opened up to the world movement of plates. The study was built up year by year, layer by layer. Some layers of learning especially on matters of sexuality have to be designed according to the levels of maturity of students.

Students build on the known to move into the unknown. This is a technique that could well be employed quite extensively in any modern design of Mastery Learning sequences. It would be useful in design of english, mathematics, science, biology, social studies and health studies.
