MASTERY LEARNING TEACHES TEACHERS.

Teachers in Papua New Guinea come from many backgrounds. Many need help and find the demands of Outcome Based Education very frightening. Some are too lazy to try.

Many teachers lack the initiative, imagination, knowledge of the world, ability to analyze and understanding of how to design sequences of Mastery Learning. They lack the ability to make study exciting and challenging for students.

So that is why preparation of Mastery Learning design has to be centralized in the hands of a design team. The team should have a helpful attitude to teachers and students and the desire to prepare exercises that the teachers and students can master at the appropriate level.

The mastery exercises for grade 4 should not be at the level of grade 10. Nor should Grade 10 exercises be at the standard of grade 4. Grade 9 exercises should not be at first year university level. The design team has to get it right.

With exercises and solutions, the Mastery Learning is training the teachers too. Then they take their new knowledge and skills to teach the students.

There should be continuity of mastery exercises from elementary to grade 12, gently progressing in simple to complex format with smooth transition from unit to unit and grade to grade. There should also be greater depth in some subjects from grade to grade.

There should be links between the subject areas. In Science and Social Studies there is the resource material for promoting writing skills.
