CIRCUMCISION AND HIV INFECTION

Research team reinvents the wheel

The National 19 September 2011 P.15

A team of researchers is investigating whether male circumcision can reduce transmission of HIV. Rachael Tommbe from Pacific Adventist University will present the research with Professor John McBride and Dr David MacLaren of James Cook University.

Maclaren said that male circumcision might be an additional way to reduce HIV transmission but there was little information on current practices. Researchers have talked with over 860 men and found that only 10% were circumcised.

A further 47% had less complete forms of circumcision where the foreskin had been cut but not removed. The procedure is often done by family or relatives. If foreskin remains so too will the mucosa cells that engulf the HIV.

AIDS Holistics has been writing on this matter since 2002 when reports came out of Sub-Sahara Africa that found 4 results:

These were (1) Proper medical circumcision removes mucosa and langerhans cells in the inside foreskin that engulf HIV (2) Much non-medical circumcision does not remove this foreskin (3) Other infections on the penis will allow entry of HIV including rashes, cuts, genital herpes and sores (4) Promiscuous circumcised men can be infected with HIV through these openings.

We refer to Door 1 - proper circumcision and Door 2 - infections on the penis. Both doors have to be closed to avoid HIV infection. A man can be infected if Door 1 or 2 are open or both.
